This is the second pair of SL72's from this era that I have for sale. I believe that these are either the second manufacturing run or late into the initial run - as there are some differences between the two pairs, though not quite the same alterations that later runs would get. Since the information on these is sparse, I've gathered what I could find and made some observations/inferences. I've kept most of my description identical to the other pair I have for sale, though I have updated the pertinent information and the photos for these. If you look closely at these, they're actually quite different from the SL72 models released through most of the 70's. As I noted, these appear to be from the period between the first production run and the models that would follow (the tongue is similar to later models but the outer soles and accents are identical to the original) Style code is 3470 (compared to 347 on the other pair) The tongue on these is quite different. It seems like a smooth leather, though it could be a different type of synthetic material, and features the trefoil badge applique instead of a stitched tag. As compared to the other pair, which features a very light nylon tongue with a stitched tag. These have a padded textile lining on the tongue as well.
The outer-sole does not yet have the 'dots' in the tread that can be found on latter models (and features 'melongit' printed where a trefoil would appear on later models) - this is consistent with the first production run. There is no branding on the heel-tab Missing the thick foxing stripe along the top-midsole that is typical of the SL72 The suede accents/sidewalls along the outer-front portion don't appear on another SL72 model. This is the most notable difference
Many similarities to the Achill, ROM, SL76, and Dragon - it seems that the design/manufacturing for these changed quickly.
If I were to guess, popularity as a result of the Munich Olympics was a primary factor (latter models had more branding, trademarked trefoil on the soles)
I've done extensive research on these and found no identical models - both on various marketplaces and on forums/databases.
These are in good condition, especially given their age and the volatility of materials used.
Vintage used condition - there is wear, residual dirt, and minor cosmetic flaws. Keep this in mind. They are in need of revitalization at the moment.
That being said - there are some issues present and this listing is primarily directed toward a collector who's inclined to properly restore them.
I've done some rudimentary cleaning and restoration work on these that didn't involve chemicals or alterations
The suede accents have some discoloration and wear in a few spots, a couple of which are glue residue from the factory. Most of the wear is near the toe-boxes (as pictured) and could likely be restored with a proper suede conditioner/cleaning agent.
There is a notable tear in the suede on the inner left (as pictured) though it's not a hole and seems to stop at the nylon/base. Furthermore, much of the suede on the inner portions of the toecap accents has been worn smooth. I assume it that it can be properly cleaned up, and they remain in-tact - but it's a typical issue with worn suede and something to keep in mind.
The midsoles are a bit rough, and likely need a stronger cleaning solution to remove some of the residual wear/discoloration.
The nylon outer shell has some discoloration here and there, most visible on the stripes.
There are a couple spots where the nylon has pulled away from the body - which can be repaired, as the tears are only in the nylon layer.
Trefoil badges on the tongues are worn where the laces would typically come in contact.
Inside, they show some signs of wear. No stains or odors, but some average discoloration and wear.
These pre-date the adidas-branded insoles, so nothing much to note there.
Suede on the heels has a couple spots of discoloration/glue/mild staining.
There doesn't appear to be any separation between the soles and the upper, but there are faded glue marks wrapping around both shoes.
A couple spots where the stitching is missing or has come loose. Doesn't appear to be a very notable issue, but the thread ends will need to be dealt with.
Laces are quite dirty and I believe that they've been cut at the ends (which are in the box)
I found no signifigant issues with this pair, aside from what I've already noted.
Please consult my photos for a better understanding of their condition, more photos are available to serious buyers upon request.
The original box and packaging is in very good condition, original sales tag and manufacturer ID attached.
My price is based on previous sales of similar models across Pricetronic and other marketplaces, as well as a third-party valuation.
Since these are unlike any other pair of SL-72's that I found across online marketplaces, it's hard to be entirely sure of their current value - but I guarantee it will increase over time.
These are extraordinarily rare and unusual -- could make for an elusive addition to any serious collection, as I doubt that you'll find another any time soon.
